700MHz spectrum, Google

It is official, FCC (Federal Communications Commission) released this week the names of the ones interested on the spectrum frequency, and as it is not a surprise Google is among them. The auction is due January 24, 2008 and so far has 96 bidders and another 170 waiting to complete their application.

Great names of wireless and cable operator are expected to bid on the bandwidth, including: AT&T Inc, Alltel Corp, Cox Communication Inc, Leap Wireless International Inc and Metro PCS Inc. There are also, some small companies and companies with different focus interested on the auction, like the TowerStream Corp, Qualcomm Inc and even the petrol giant Chevron, names like the Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen are also included.

The auctions are generating such interest because the spectrum is seen by many as the best bandwidth available for providing so-called 4G broadband services in the next decade. The 700MHz airwaves are becoming available as analog TV broadcasters move to digital.

Well in this Titans battle the one with deep pockets are likely to take it all.
