Android : Palm’s best chance?

Almost 2008, and we are still surrounded with especulations about

Android and which OEMs will adopt the platform to their hardwares. In a Podcast discussing Palm’s future  J. Edward Rutkowski and Tadd Rosenfeld (of msmobiles.com and mytreo.net respectively) they talked about the company implement the OS in a future generation of Palms.

In recent news we saw how the impact of the Palm Centro and the Treo family are affecting the company which has a low profit margin from the products, leading to a cut of costs and a new project towards a Linux based operating system. Thoses facts would be more than enough reasons to the company adopt the Google’s Android.

After the open source’s announcement Ryan Block called for Palm to make connections with Google, however it looks like they are still on their own, and  looking to OEM providers (with Open Handset Alliance member HTC pegged as favourite) to develop new WM-based handsets.

“Palm has always been committed to open platforms for developers. And Palm has the added differentiation of being able to tightly integrate the software platform with our hardware design, which we believe gives us an advantage in delivering a great user experience.  Palm customers have benefited from the availability of Google services on Palm’s platform, such as Google Maps for mobile on Palm OS. And we look forward to further collaboration with Google to offer great user experiences on Palm products” Palm comment to Endgaget

The plans so far for Palm are clear, keep up with the Centro production which gave them a good market, and try to push their tight budget to the new OS coming up in 2009. With profits getting lower and with the enter of new competitors it would make sense to adopt the strategy that could help them to save time until the new OS reaches the market.
