After constant lost on the internet market for Google, Yahoo decided to fight back but this time targeting Android. The company announced this week to open their Web mobile platform to developers to create applications that will fit the Yahoo web page.
The goal here would be to increase their popularity on the mobile market.
Will this work? Hard to tell, Yahoo is trying to take the same maneuver that Google will take against Baidu. Where they struggle to increase their market share, so going mobile before Android makes an official apperance to the public might be a great shot.
Besides the "widgets" developed by outside programmers, Yahoo will also develop exclusive mobile content which users will have the possibility to choose which material will be highlighted on their handset. In addition the popular Yahoo! Go software that lets users have important Yahoo! services on the mobile phone will also be upgraded soon. Yahoo! believes the Go software provided Yahoo! an early advantage in catering to an estimated three billion mobile phone subscribers around the world.
Personally I belong to the 65% of Google market share, and even my mobile is set for Google applications, such as Google maps and Gmail. Yahoo’s idea of allowing user to highlight material is good, but I don’t see this strategy working unless they become more flexible about leting users choose what they want to see on a website.
