Is it possible Google kills the GPS industry with Android devices?

Let me talk about Google Maps for a while. Google brought the Maps system for the web which is basically running over your browser allowing you to watch the World map and the major cities you that can see in 5 views;

  1. Transport Map –Which includes all the roads, avenues, parks, Tube stations, and important places.
  2. Satellite –It’s the satellite photo map which can become really close from the ground.
  3. Hybrid Map -Basically it’s the mix between then, where you can see the satellite pictures with all the labels, street names, etc.
  4. Traffic Map -Real time traffic condition
  5. Street View -You can also see how the street you’re looking for looks like

Moreover you can trace route including, multi-point routes, so Google will also give you directions to reach the place you want to get. Also they are integrating the capability to traceroute using the public transport.

After had your route you can always ask Google, for e.g. for a Chinese restaurant, flower shop, nearby, then with a simple drag and drop you can add another point to go before end you journey, which by the way you’re not able to do using a GPS device. This system can easily be uses nowadays. If you didn’t try it out, well you should here. Coincidentally Google already announced a tight integration between Android+Location System+Google Maps. This location system has two different versions:

  1. GPS System
  2. Cell tower
  3. Wifi

GPS everyone knows, but the cell tower system means that even though your mobile hasn’t a GPS built-in the OS will take you location using information based on your distance from the Cell tower or if using a Wifi connection and if it has a Geo tag system Google Maps will display on the Map where you might be. If you’re not there, drag and drop the marker to the point you are. Now the only thing it lacks is in interface, but with Google having the Android Challenge worth in 10M dollars you might see new things really nice coming out. Now the question is, having an Android Mobile, which gives you a full GPS capability plus, a map with shops around plus, the majority cities on the world, traffic system in real-time for FREE would you even think about buy a GPS device?? Nowadays you can get a simple, starting from $100 and then $10 a month.Personally I wouldn’t buy would you?

Do you think Google will kill GPS as we know nowadays?
